SimCenter Engagement at University of Pavia, Italy

March 13, 2024

Matt DeJong, SimCenter PI and co-director, delivered a seminar at the University of Pavia, Italy on March 1, 2024. During the seminar, titled “SimCenter tools for computational earthquake engineering, uncertainty quantification, and regional-scale simulations,” he underscored an overarching objective of SimCenter, emphasizing its commitment to enable leaders to make more informed decisions about the necessity and efficacy of potential mitigation strategies. The presentation highlighted recent advancements in SimCenter simulation tools, including:

  • EE-UQ, Earthquake Engineering with Uncertainty Quantification application, which integrates new building model generators.
  • quoFEM, Quantified Uncertainty with Optimization for the Finite Element Method application, which features new optimization, sensitivity, and calibration tools.
  • PELICUN, Probabilistic Estimation of Losses, Injuries, and Community resilience Under Natural disasters, a python package which has new extensions that supports the PBE (Performance Based Engineering) application.

The seminar also highlighted several case studies to demonstrate the utility of the simulation tools in the field of earthquake engineering and related research areas.

Approximately 40 faculty, post-doctoral researchers, and Ph.D. students specializing in structural engineering and regional risk assessment attended the seminar which was hosted by University of Pavia, Department of Civil and Architectural Engineering, and Eucentre
